Marcus Brandon is a lifelong resident of Guilford County who, while growing up in a family entrenched in the civil rights movement, learned the value of public service at an early age. Ever since he could walk he was out working to better his community, passing out fliers, knocking on doors, and organizing with his family to continue the movement of equal opportunity and equal access.

Marcus left Guilford County for several years and worked in the progressive movement. He has served as National Finance Director and co- campaign manager for Congressman Dennis Kucinich, Major Gifts Manager for Progressive Majority and Deputy Director for Equality Virginia to name a few. Marcus returned home and put his experience to work and ran for public office. In 2010 Marcus beat an entrenched incumbent to become the first openly gay member of the North Carolina House and one of five out African-Americans in the country serving on the state and federal level.

Marcus was a tremendous voice this year in the general assembly as they debated the marriage amendment. Although the Marriage Amendment passed, Marcus is proud of swaying fellow democrats that had normally sponsored the bill, to vote against it, and changing the discourse of the debate with his diplomatic spirit in the General Assembly. In his first year, Marcus has received Legislator of the Year Awards for Domestic Violence Prevention, Equality North Carolina, Democrats for Education Reform, and the ACLU.

Marcus pledges that NC will win the fight for dignity in May, "its out time to take our place in history, its our time to let the people of NC know that this fight is not about marriage, its about dignity and we will fight for it and history proves that we will win it."
