Lesbian Rep. Tammy Baldwin has raised more than $2 million over the course of the first quarter of 2012 in her bid to become the first openly gay person elected to the U.S. Senate.

The candidate is set to be the featured speaker at the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund's annual national campaign brunch, which will take place Sunday at the Washington Hilton.

Denis Dison, a vice president at the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, a group that backs gay and lesbian candidates for public office, said having an "out-lesbian" as mayor of New York City would be a "game changer."

"It would be a milestone for LGBT people, not only in the United States but around the world, given the profile of the city," Mr. Dison said. "It would be a signal about the progress that all LGBT and women have made in the political arena."
