Lowe celebrates Gainesville, Fla. voters' affirmation of gay rights

Thu, Mar 26th 2009, 09:39

Voters in Gainesville, Florida last night decisively turned back an attempt to repeal the city’s decade-old LGBT anti-discrimination ordinance, voting 58 percent to 42 percent against Amendment 1.

The city commission’s sole openly gay member, Craig Lowe, told GayPolitics.com, “This is a fantastic validation of what I’ve always thought, which is that the people of Gainesville are fair-minded and believe in true equality for all. I’m proud of my city.”

Lowe is a former Victory Fund endorsee, and the driving force behind the addition of protections for transgender citizens that were added to the ordinance in January 2008.
